Dance/Movement Therapy
Kestenberg Movement Profile
Art in motion

Dance/movement therapy is a psychotherapeutic use of movement and it can be an effective method in helping all ages as "The Body Never Lies".  Our inner world is expressed through their physical experiences. Therefore changes to the movement can cause psychological changes. It is the union of the body and mind.

Dance/Movement Therapy helps to regulate a child’s emotions and providing an outlet for expression. It helps to improve body image of the child; self-awareness and mastering movement with a sense of self-control. The session can be facilitated with parents in the sessions to bring about the connection and to understand one's rhythms.

Dance/movement with seniors or people with dementia can be conducted in a seated position and/or standing. The smallest initiation of movement is a dance of one’s ability to find connection to the mind and memories. With the group sense of cohesion it facilitates social interaction and identification of one’s dance that is mirrored to the other and vice versa. The circle in the group is a holding place where one will feel supported and safe to move in the non-judgemental space which enable one to feel accepted and empowered towards attaining therapeutic goals. This may help to help to improve body-image and mastering a sense of self-control with is often validated through music, play and art.

Developmental Rhythms through the lens of Kestenberg Movement (KMP) Profile .

The KMP provides a formal system of observation, notation, and analysis within a theoretical framework that interprets the meaning of movement that relates to developmental processes. Movement rhythms are the tension-flow changes that occur in the body. They build a continuous stream of information for us to identify the child’s needs and in their developmental level. Assessing the developmental level of the child helps to find the necessary treatment interventions to move the child further to the next developmental step. The underlying belief is that moving the child further along on the body level will have positive developmental implications for the emotional and cognitive development of the child.  The profile observes the interaction and the bodily processes that mediate the quality of their relation and their degrees of attunement and clashing on the body level between care giver and children in their everyday interactions.

Art in motion as a therapeutic tool of dialogue. When words fail, Art serves as an a creative intervention to give meaning for expression especially working with special needs children, and even to seniors. It allows anyone to express themselves in non-verbal means through art. This form of art expression provides an outlet for one to communication where words are minimal. Every single stroked and rhythms speak of their story and emotions. Art brings about a communication tool for cross-cultural conversation where the personal dialogue is formed during the therapeutic relationship.
